Nuclear energy

I believe it's high time we begin to take a fresh look at nuclear energy, much in the same fashion as the country of France. They've had little to no incidents over the past 20 or 30 years. My only...

So... What are we really doing?

This past weekend I took my kids to the zoo. It was really fun as it was my baby son's first trip ever to see the animals and have a closer look. But as I'm telling my co-workers and friends about the exciting weekend I had with my family, I just realized how selfish it sounds. As human beings we're always analyzing and visualizing all the possibilities Nature has to offer to us: beautiful flora and fauna, amazing animals, breath taking sights. But, what do we give in return? Let me just descri… Continue

Bay Area May Impose Global Warming Fees on Businesses That Pollute

There was a great article in the San Jose Mercury News over the weekend about a proposed plan to charge Bay Area businesses a 'cost recovery fee' based on their greenhouse gas emissions. The cool thing about this plan, and what makes it different from a traditional (and controversial) 'carbon tax', is that the money goes directly toward global warming reduction measures in Bay Area communities.

It's a simple concept, but one that see… Continue

How Much Water Do You Really Use?

Hint: probably a whole lot more than you may think, and it has very little to do with drinking or bathing. There's a concept called 'virtual water' which is gaining traction as a way to track the amount of water is used or consumed to produce materials or grow food. This is not water that is actually contained within the content of the product or food, but a measure of the average quantity of water that it takes, from start… Continue

Northern California Debuts Recycling Program for Home Medication

We all get sick or injured every now and again. For me, it's injuries (typically incurred from snowboarding into trees or bike race crashes), and it's more than I'd like to admit. With every visit to the doctor's office, there's a good chance of being prescribed some medication for whatever symptoms might be ailing. But after a few days, what happens almost every time? You're feeling better and the rest of the medication gets tossed into the cabinet. Fast forward to spring cleaning time, and wh… Continue

Got Paper?

There's certainly no shortage of paper products in the world. Did you know that global paper consumption is approaching one million tons per day? The case for buying recycled paper is clear, but when it comes to buying paper for your home printer, kids' schoolwork or just notepads for jotting down ideas, it can be tough to figure out all the different types of recycled paper products out there. Make sure that your paper clearly states the following characteristics to ensure a minimal glo… Continue

Green Taxi Cabs

Did you know that there are almost 1,400 taxis in San Francisco alone? In New York, the number is 10 times that figure. Couple the sheer volume of vehicles with the fact that they spend the majority of their running time idling in traffic, and you get a very large fossil fuel sink and pollution source. What if hybrid vehicles were used to replace out-of-commission taxis? After all, the average turnover ti… Continue

Universities and Sustainability, Ethics

I've been somehow involved with the University of Virgina since 2000, and I can say that lots of talking about proposed changes on Grounds with regards to sustainability and greening, and the rest. I'm current an MBA candidate at UVA's Darden Graduate School of Business. My big question is, what changes will make the most impact, and what changes are just fluff. As we go ahead trying to figure out where to spend our limited resources to make a positive change, we should consider the net impact.… Continue
